BAND MILL SCHOOL

The Band Mill School location belonged to Benedict Lumber Company.  The school was probably in Clifty in the 13th Civil District of White County near the Arnold Benedict Lumber Camp on the Caney Fork River.

Bon Air Coal and Iron Corporation leased property (15 year lease) to Ransom Benedict Company March 9, 1920.  “Under said lease, the lessee shall have the right to erect a lumber mill or mills thereon, to build houses for employees and all other improvements that may be necessary, useful or convenient in the manufacture of lumber.”  It is believed the school was located on this land.

The Band Mill School was in operation in the 1920’s and 1930’s.  The county superintendent’s office records show the school warrants written to Bessie Carr in 1915-1917.  Teachers were Bessie Carr and Gussie Selby.
